Best Places To Drink In Oakland

Unless you are from the Bay Area there is a pretty good chance you would never think to come to Oakland for a night out drinking. Even Bay Area locals often think of San Francisco as a drinking destination, however that is all changing. If you are planning a trip to the Bay Area or currently living in the Bay Area and want to sample something new, be sure to check out Oak Town (Oakland).

Heinhold’s First and Last Chance Saloon

For me Heinhold’s holds a special place in my heart. It has been the starting point of many misadventures in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Heinhold’s was a favorite hangout for author Jack London thanks to the generosity of the original owner Johnny Heinhold. Before becoming a famous American author, Jack London would spend most of his time hunched over a book outside of the bar in the rain since he had nowhere else to go. Feeling sorry for the 10 year boy Mr. Heinhold invited the young Jack London to seek shelter from the rain so he could continue reading and the rest is history.

Cafe Van Kleef

Sadly the owner of this establishment, Peter Van Kleef passed away September 2015, however the eclectic and quirky ambiance have no intentions of changing. The bar is decorated with some of the most unusual items you will ever see which is one of the reasons people visit. The primary reason people visit is fresh-squeezed juices that go into their cocktails such as their famous Greyhound. If you like live music Cafe Van Kleef is a great place to enjoy a tasty beverage while catching some tunes.

Hopscotch

Although their name sounds like something reminiscent of an elementary school yard. These guys are not playing games around when it comes to their cocktails. Their bartenders are always experimenting with flavor combinations that pair well with their seasonal menu. The appeal of Hopscotch is the diner ambiance with an upscale twists. Their cocktails and their food will leave a lasting impression for weeks to come.

Boot and Shoe Service

You won’t be able to get your shoe’s polished here, but you will be served one of the best Gin and Tonics you will ever try. I know what you are thinking, who still drinks G&T’s? Well, the tonic is house made and it has inspired other bars and restaurants to try and do the same so the G&T is well worth your time. For me the appeal comes from the bare brick walls and exposed wooden beams giving this place a stylish architectural look worthy of Architectural Digest’s front cover.

Pican

If you are looking for a little Southern Hospitality in a trendy urban environment, Pican is the place for you. The restaurant is known for its upscale New Orleans flavors and its bar is known for having one of the largest Bourbon collections in the Bay Area. If you are not brave enough to sample their Bourbon flights, perhaps you can try one of their signature cocktails such as Rosemary’s Baby, Black Hand, or Lavender Lemon Drop.
