The “Fried” Chicken That Closely Resembles KFC, But Is Way Healthier!

You might have noticed the word fried keeps appearing in quotations. This “fried” chicken was made healthy thanks to oven frying! The chicken still technically fries and becomes crisp but the amount of fat used in this recipe is much lower than deep frying or pan frying the chicken.

It’s a great way of eating “fried” chicken without negatively affecting your health. That’s part one of this recipe, though. The most crucial part is the season. The seasoning, after all, is what makes KFC so tasty and this recipe nails it pretty closely.

Check out the recipe below and let us know what you think both in flavor and consistency.

Ingredients

  • 3 chicken breasts, cut into strips (I get about 3 out of one breast)
  • 4-5 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp seasoning salt (I use Lawry’s)
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place butter on a large baking sheet and place in the oven to melt (once the butter is melted, remove it from the oven so it doesn’t burn!).
  2. Combine all ingredients besides chicken and butter in a large paper or Ziploc bag. Add the chicken and shake to coat.
  3. Take your baking sheet out of the oven once the butter has melted place your chicken on it, leaving a space between each strip. Bake 10 minutes, flip gently with a pair of tongs and bake another 10-12 minutes.
  4. Be sure to check to make sure your chicken is cooked, as the thickness can greatly affect baking time. You want it to be done but not overdone and dry. Bake another 5-10 minutes if needed.
  5. Remove to a plate lined with paper towel to soak up any excess grease. Serve immediately.

Hi Joyce, dusting the chicken with flour allows the eggs and bread crumbs to stick to the chicken and form a really nice crust. Not required but it does help.
